Enamel hypoplasia is a condition that causes the enamel of one's teeth to be thinner than it should be. The enamel is the outer layer of the tooth which acts as a protective covering. The enamel also helps teeth to look whiter and to be stronger.
Two types of enamel hypoplasia exist. One type is hereditary, and the other type can be caused by things like premature birth, malnutrition, injury to developing teeth, and infections. In some cases, enamel hypoplasia can affect an area on a single tooth and in other cases all the teeth can be affected.
